Ovulation induction and Timed Sexual Intercourse
We often do not need to use very advanced assisted reproduction technology to help our patients to become pregnant. Certain conditions of the ovaries could be overcome with simple intervention.
Ovulation induction and timed sexual intercourse is offered to couples when the sperm analysis is normal, there is no significant ovarian dysfunction and we do not suspect obstruction of the Fallopian tubes. In spite of being apparently healthy, some patients may still have problems with conceiving.
Usually, we ask you to take some tablets and 2-3 injections that are going to assist the formation of a follicle. Your ovaries may then, after such medication, produce 2-3 follicles; however in such cases the risk of a twin pregnancy is about 5% per cycle. We will also need to check the size of the growing follicle(s) by performing transvaginal scans (usually 2 or 3 scans). Once we know the follicle(s) is/are ready, we will give you another type of medication to induce ovulation and advise you when to have intercourse. The pregnancy test is recommended about 2 weeks after the last injection.
