Egg & Sperm Freezing

Pregnancy rates decrease after certain age (usually 36-37 years), in such cases some women, who would like to preserve their chance for motherhood, may benefit from egg freezing.

Low temperature (-196°C) freezing in liquid nitrogen maintains viability of eggs, even after long-term storage. Recently, a freezing technique called vitrification has shown increased survival and pregnancy rates in studies carried out throughout the world.

The ability to freeze human eggs gives significant advantages in clinical assisted reproduction. First, this technique does not require a partner’s sperm and thus can be used to preserve fertility in single women. Secondly, some of the ethical issues relating to the storage of surplus embryos are avoided.

London Fertility Centre is amongst a handful of centres in the UK providing vitrification for human eggs. This decision was taken after careful consideration of the published data and with a view to enhance patient care. So far the survival rate of eggs after this procedure is as high as 90%.
