SENIOR EMBRYOLOGIST – FULL TIME

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

1.         GENERAL INFORMATION:

 

            JOB TITLE:                            Senior Embryologist

 

LOCATION:                         London Fertility Centre or such other place as the Company may continue to carry on business from time to time. 

 

2.         LINE RELATIONSHIPS:

 

RESPONSIBLE TO:              Laboratory Quality Manager, Centre Quality Manager and Director.

           

3.         JOB SUMMARY

 

To work within a rota system enabling coverage of the clinical embryology laboratory from Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:30, Saturday 08:30 to 16:00 and Sunday 09:00 to 16:00 as required.  Additional hours may be required to attend a new patients evening, Unit Meeting and other meetings.  Senior Embryologists are required to liase with the laboratory manager, scientific director and assist junior embryologists in developing skills.  It is essential for all Laboratory staff to develop a strong sense of responsibility towards their work and the patients, while at the same time, co-operating and communicating with all other staff to produce the highest possible standards of laboratory care so that patients may expect optimal clinical outcome of treatment. 

 

 

4.         DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Senior Embryologist:

 

Routine Clinical Embryology

 

Collection and insemination of oocytes, assessment and selection of embryos prior to transfer, participation in embryo transfer procedures as well as GIFT and ZIFT procedures

 

Cryopreservation of embryos and semen

 

Routine clinical andrology – preparation of sperm for intrauterine insemination, GIFT, IVF and ICSI procedures

 

Diagnostic andrology – assessment of semen according to WHO guidelines, detection of antisperm antibodies and 24/48 hour culture for new patients

 

Clinical Micromanipulation – participation in the clinical ICSI programme including stripping of oocytes with hyaluronidase prior to micromanipulation, assessment of oocyte maturation state and microinjection of oocytes

 

Preparation of epididymal and testicular sperm for micro-injection

 

Development of research interests

 

Media preparation as required

 

Maintain laboratory and HFEA paperwork for each patient to a high standard

 

Computerise all work to keep up to date results

 

Laboratory and equipment cleaning

 

Assist with the development of junior embryologists

 

Engage in programmes of continuing professional development.

 

Comply with all statutory conditions, additional licence conditions (where applicable),  recommendations (where applicable), Directions, Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990, Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) Code of Practice Sixth Edition or subsequent, Directive 2004/23/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU setting standards of quality and safety for the donation, procurement, testing, processing, preservation, storage and distribution of reproductive cells for human application and the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 (Amendment) Regulations 2006 and any other legal requirements.

 

 

5.         QUALITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

            The applicant must:

·         be attentive to detail

·         have good time-keeping

·         on occasions be prepared to work outside of normal working hours

·         hold a life sciences degree

·         hold a licence to practice ICSI

·         have at least three years of clinical embryology

·         hold an ACE Certificate

·         be State Registered

·         understand the importance of Quality Control and Quality Management Systems.

 

Experience of working in a Quality Management System would be an advantage.
